Representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Birecik came together at a meeting organized by the Birecik Civil Solidarity Platform. Bülbülzade Foundation President Turgay Aldemir addressed the participants as a guest of the platform.
At the meeting, the purpose, methods, and future of civil society activities were discussed. In his speech, Aldemir emphasized the “Century of Türkiye” and the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process, stating that civil society must continuously update itself both in vision and practical applications. Saying, “New problems cannot be treated with old prescriptions,” Aldemir used the following expressions: “We are members of a great human family. There can be no excuse for not being united. Each of us ultimately has common goals and purposes. By leaning on the values that make us who we are, we can make modest contributions to the future of our country and the world.”
YOUNG PEOPLE NEED MORE THAN ADVICE
Delivering important messages regarding the approach toward younger generations, Aldemir emphasized that young people need friendship and environments where they are included in decision-making mechanisms rather than sermons and advice: “When we impose our own truths on them, they become defensive and therefore close themselves off to everything that comes from us. In this context, we should read worldwide research and update our language.”
WE MUST WORK IN A PLANNED AND PROGRAMMED MANNER
Touching upon institutional structure, Aldemir stated that NGOs should aim for planned work, written culture, sustainability, and accountability in order to increase functionality and productivity. Saying, “We must go beyond working by trial and error,” he added, “We should plan and prepare in advance how, with whom, when, where, and why we will do a task.”
The meeting was attended by representatives of foundations and associations operating in the region such as the Birecik District Mufti’s Office, Yedi Hilal, Birecik Önder, Davet ve Kardeşlik Foundation, Cihannüma Birecik, Diyanet-Sen, Eğitim Bir-Sen, AGD, MGV, İHH, Şanlıurfa Peygamber Sevdalıları, Yetim Foundation, Umut Kervanı, as well as NEDDER and BEYDER.
This meaningful gathering was considered an important step in strengthening consultation and cooperation opportunities among different NGOs. It is expected that the experienced perspective of Bülbülzade Foundation President Turgay Aldemir will bring new momentum to other civil society efforts in the region.
